Fourth CSGS Beach Volleyball Tournament


4th CSGS Beach Volleyball Tournament will be held on August 17, 2012 3pm-5pm at the Volleydome (2825 24th Ave NW, Calgary).

The cost for the event will be $6. There is no charge for cancellation up to 72 hours before the tournament (i.e. Tuesday, August 14, 5pm). Your team will be counting on you, so we regret to say that cancellation after August 14 5pm will be charged the full amount of $6.

7th Annual CSGS Golf Tournament

7th Annual CSGS Golf Tournament was held on Friday, July 20, 2012 in McCall Lake Golf Course. Computer Science students gathered together and had a great day playing Golf in a sunny summer day. After playing golf in a 9-hole course, we went back to campus and met again in LDL to announce the winner and award the prizes. The winner team consisted of Brad (captain), Ahmad, Arash and Hossein. This tournament was the first event held by the new CSGS executives. CSGS looks forward to seeing all CSGS members in the next events.

Career Planning Seminars

CSGS is organizing a Photography contest and we’re looking for the best photos in the department!. The contest is open to all current graduate students of Department of Computer Science.

Alan Turing Centenary 2012

The University of Calgary will offer a series of talks on Turing's work throughout the Winter and Fall 2012 terms.  The lectures will be aimed at a general audience and are open to the public. Later in the year, Telus Spark will also host some events related to Turing as part of their Adults Only Thursday night series and the Calgary Science Café.

Winter 2012 CSGS Welcome Back Party

Hi everybody,

We hope everyone had a good holiday break!

The CSGS will be holding a welcome back party
on Thursday, January the 26th, at 12:00 pm (noon) in ICT 516.  There will
be chelo-kabob as the main dish and other snacks/refreshments (there
will be vegetarian options as well). This is a great opportunity for new
graduate students to meet and mingle with other graduate students,
staff and faculty, while returning graduate students get to catch up
with each
other.

Pason programming contest

The ECE department has hooked up with Pason Systems to sponsor a programming contest on Feb 4. Open to ECE and CPSC students (ugrad/grad). Poster is by the ICT elevators on ground floor. Generous cash prizes!!

CSGS Annual Food Drive - 2011

The annual campus food drive is an important event for students in need here at the University of Calgary. In previous years, grad students have accounted for as much as 60% of those who must patronize services such as the food bank. For a couple of years, all proceeds has been going to the Campus Food Bank. CSGS will be participating in the GSA's Holiday Food Drive. The Departmental Graduate Association which gathers the greatest number of donations will receive a sizeable gift certificate for the Last Defense, so help us compete for the department!

CSGS is organizing a food drive by getting all computer science labs to donate. Items like food and toiletries are the most welcome towards helping students in need. CSGS is also pleased to offer the lab which donates the most points (as outlined below) the honour of receiving the one and only Soup Can Cup, as well as a small prize of their own. Each item your lab donates to the cause is worth points, as listed below:

* The penalty for such (unusable) items is -2 EA, for the first three, and -5 EA thereafter. The policy is put to encourage labs to double-check their collection of items before the collection date.
** Cash donations will be accepted on December 6 and 7 only, at a value of 1 point per dollar.

Labeled boxes should arrive in your lab by November 18, 2011, for the generous donations of you and your labmates. Here follows a list of currently known box locations:.
